Why are hot and cold faucets separated in Britain?

Jul 14, 2021

People who have been to the UK believe that they have seen the faucet with the separation of cold and heat on the sink, which is very different from the design of the combination of cold and heat in most countries. So Tucao came: why not make complaints about what is cold and hot? Even the Wall Street Journal reported that British people like to wash their hands in cold water, which is helpful to shape their personality. I'm afraid it's a kind of high-grade black!

In fact, to solve this mystery, we must first understand a way of designing houses in Britain after World War II. After World War II, many houses in Britain installed a water storage tank on the roof attic. This tank is not large and can hold about 250 liters of water. The hot water system of the whole house, including the hot water faucets of heating, kitchen and toilet, took water from this tank and heated it slowly. Therefore, these hot water are not connected with the tap water pipe. Moreover, there is a more important problem. The hot water from the storage tank is not particularly clean. Water storage tanks are usually less maintained, and many are open design, so there are often all kinds of dirty things falling inside, such as dust, rust, insects, etc., and sometimes even dead mice. Therefore, the water in the water storage tank and the water connected to the hot water tap cannot be regarded as drinking water in the British drinking water standard.

But the cold water faucet is different. The water from the cold water faucet comes out directly from the tap water main pipe. All of them are directly drinkable water. Therefore, if you mix the water from the cold water faucet and the hot water faucet, the clean water will be mixed with the unclean water. Moreover, sometimes the water pressure is not enough for the maintenance of the water pipe. If the two water pipes are connected, the unclean hot water may flow back to the whole water pipe, which may pollute the water pipe of the whole street. Therefore, the faucet separating cold and hot has become a realistic and natural design in Britain.

However, many new houses in Britain now have no such water storage tanks and use instant hot water heating devices. In such houses, of course, cold and hot faucets are used.
